BLUETS: to fall under a spell

August 3 – 26, 2017
Juror Jack Fischer

Opening Reception:
Friday, August 4th from 6-9 pm

The works in BLUETS explore the theme inspired by the writer Maggie Nelson, who has written that to love the color blue was to fall “under a spell, a spell I fought to stay under and get out from under, in turns.” Blue is commonly associated with harmony, faithfulness, confidence, distance, infinity, the imagination, cold, and sometimes with sadness. References to the color include blue chip, blue collar, the wild blue yonder, having the blues, singing the blues, out of the blue, once in a blue moon. The color blue has been said to physically calm and sedate, cool, and aid intuition. “There is no blue without yellow and without orange”— Vincent Van Gogh.

Bluets was juried by Jack Fischer, principal of Jack Fischer Gallery. Currently at 311 Potrero Avenue and 1275 Minnesota Street in San Francisco, Jack Fischer is devoted to the work of outsider, self-taught, intuitive artists and continues to exhibit work he characterizes as “from the heart and the gut.”
